HS2 is currently one of the largest infrastructure opportunities in the UK. Phase One is valued at £55.7bn and will link London Euston to Birmingham by 2026. A-Plant is in a unique position within the hire industry to be able to supply nationally a wide variety of the equipment necessary to undertake the huge scope of works associated with the HS2 programme, which includes the construction of new stations, tunnels and railway lines. A-Plant has been working in close collaboration with the HS2 Delivery Teams for many years, developing ways we can support the project by aligning our resources to meet their requirements.
Sustainable Working, Happy Living Impact Week
Managing and maintaining health, safety and environmental issues is an important element of the HS2 programme of works and contractors and suppliers must demonstrate their commitment to providing an industry leading approach in these issues. The Costain Skanska HS2 Delivery Joint Venture, one of three delivery partners for the Phase One enabling works, requested A-Plant to support their ‘Sustainable Working, Happy Living Impact Week’, a 3-day event which aimed to stimulate discussions around how suppliers can “eliminate harm through diversity of thought and by embracing technology”.
Improving safety through innovation is at the heart of everything A-Plant does, and the aim of the event aligned very closely with the A-Plant ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’ campaign. A-Plant has developed long-term, sustainable relationships with manufacturers to continually invest in cutting-edge equipment designed to improve safety and protect the environment. Identifying and investing in products which address our customers’ specific requirements provides many benefits, not only in the areas of health, safety and the environment but also by improving productivity, cost and quality. A-Plant welcomed the opportunity to showcase a range of these products to the Costain Skanska JV team, who included engineers, site managers, health and safety and procurement managers.
Some of the products showcased from across our specialist division were as follows:
Opti-cal displayed a comprehensive range of environmental monitoring and utility detection products which would benefit HS2. There was a lot of interest in the Leica Pegasus:Two Ultimate Mobile Mapping system for survey grade data capture across multiple applications in road, rail and marine sectors. Also the new Leica RTC360 lightweight, portable, high performance laser scanner designed for maximum productivity, scanning at up to 2 million points per second.
FLG Services presented the Elebia Hook, a high specification crane hook which allows the user to remotely attach and release with no handling, and a portable Defibrillator which guides the user through the CPR process to dramatically increase chances of survival.
Mather and Stuart presented the Hybrid Generator which can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional units. The Hybrid Generator provides silent power which is particularly beneficial when working in highly populated areas.
M&E Solutions presented the Armorgard Cutting Station, a portable system which provides a safe exclusion zone for cutting activities while also reducing noise. They demonstrated the manually operated Eco Lift and a battery operated Pressing Tool used for pipe work and crimping, which provides a safer alternative to traditional hot works.
Our long standing partner Wacker Neuson also attended the event alongside our team and presented their new zero emissions Electric Trench Rammer and Electric Compaction Plate, perfectly suited for use in inner city areas. They demonstrated the new Dual View Dumper which allows the operator to change the direction of their view to improve visibility and safety.
The results - Collaboration will help Eliminate Harm
A-Plant is always keen to support customers with their own initiatives and to work in partnership to understand their key objectives. This event was an excellent opportunity not only to demonstrate the wide variety of products A-Plant can offer to HS2, but also to learn more from the HS2 delivery team about which products and equipment will be of particular interest as the project progresses. By understanding these requirements in more detail, A-Plant will continue to invest in suitable products and help champion new product developments, to ensure we can meet the requirements of the HS2 project and find safer ways of working.
Tom Welland, A-Plant HS2 Project Lead commented: “We are grateful to Costain Skanska for inviting us to take part in a great 3 day event. Working safely is something both A-Plant and Costain Skanska are passionate about and the event allowed us to share best practice and introduce new product innovations to their workforce to help us work more safely together. These events are significant to A-Plant as they allow us to engage with our customers across multiple departments to ensure we are aligning ourselves with their values and providing solutions to their challenges.”
The Costain Skanska JV team were impressed with the range of equipment A-Plant can supply, and the event helped them to further understand which alternative products are available that might do the job more safety or efficiently. Matt Dean, SHE Manager for HS2 EW South Delivery JV commented: “Thank you for your input this week in making ‘Sustainable Working Happy Living Impact Week’ on HS2 such a great success. Your time, advice and input has really been appreciated in putting together a week that has no doubt had an impact in helping us to ‘eliminate harm’. I look forward to introducing as many of the ideas as possible.”
