At Opti-cal, we like to make sure you get the best support possible, and that includes ensuring that you know how to use the equipment we provide to its full potential for improved and efficient workflow in the field and the office.
As a result, not only do we offer equipment for purchase and hire, as well as servicing, we also provide thorough training on a range of instruments. Our training courses can be tailored to suit your needs, sector and skill level, and can be at a location of your choosing, whether that’s on site, at your offices or at our service centres.
We also work with other companies to deliver training, as we did recently, when our own Mark Hannaford joined with CTS trainer, Bruce Wright, at Birmingham University.
Not only was the day surprisingly warm (warm enough to need plenty of sun protection) but the setting in the heart of Birmingham University made an excellent location. While some of the training was in a classroom setting, the majority was set in a picturesque field with a pond and an enormous green space, made slightly more difficult by the fact that the work was situated on a fairly steep slope.
The CTS course lasts for five days. The day we were there focused on Total Stations, and there was a mixture of training on both the TS06Plus and the TS16. The Leica TS06Plus is a good teaching instrument to get the principles of engineering across as the angles and distance are always on display. The students were able to work back through complicated engineering and surveying tasks using basic principles and their brains. This is very useful on site when making checks on setting out.
The TS16 Robotic Total Station is an industry staple. Students who hadn’t used one-person kits before were guided through how they work whilst more experienced users were able to ask questions about aspects that had been exasperating them for a while!
Before lunch was taken up with a typical setting out exercise. With four coordinates in the Total Stations, and detailed paper plans, the students used a traversed loop of control points (Monday’s task) to position the Total Stations and set out the corners of a large building. Reference Line and the working drawings supplied the rest of the building floor plan.
After a break for lunch and much-needed beverages, it was back to work. The morning’s work was double checked and then the TS16 was used to record a small topographical survey. Points, lines, codes, curved lines and geo-referenced photographs were recorded to show students how to save valuable time and avoid drafting mistakes. A demonstration on volume calculation was also shown.
We would like to say a huge thank you to CTS for allowing us to take images and record this training.
